Redtails v Casey Demons in Melbourne

The Redtails faced their next challenge playing Casey Demons at Casey Fields Oval on Saturday the 4th of March 2017.

Casey Demons got the first 2 goals on the score board before Maddocks answered with a fine mark and goal for us. Casey replied with another goal, while Gibbo was close but managed only a point. Kunoth slotted a major shorty after to have us trailing by 7 points by the end of the first quarter.

Lockyer had great presence in defence with sound support from Clarke finding the big body of Prior and a point to our score. Barry was quick to gather from a ball-in and jam the ball onto his boot for a great goal, giving the lads enthusiasm and zest. Casey hit back strongly with 2 points and a goal. Lockyer and Clarke continued their effective movement from defence with assistance from Hart, McGhie and Liddle making Casey work for their next goal. Liddle went in strongly for a tackle and suffered a hard knock deeming him a concussion risk and resulting in no further involvement on the field. Strong defence from Hart propelled the ball forward through Nashy and Robbie Smith to locate the lethal Gibbo for his first goal. Casey didn’t wane and kept attacking to add 2 points then another goal. True Kunoth style had him gather from the middle and weave his way into space to locate Gibbo who just missed for another point. Bradley with his stealth intercepted the kick out to find the eager Kunoth and a goal to trail by 6 just points. Unfortunately all but one second before the siren, Casey kicked true and took a lead of 17 points into the half time break.

In defence, Captain Tyson Carmody was forced off the field to sort his shoulder strapping. Within minutes we also had a chain of defender injuries seeing McGhie leave with an ankle, as well as Hart, followed by Bartee with a Hamstring, leaving the coaching group a huge dilemma to shuffle players around and regroup the defensive lines. One of our key midfielders (Barry) also sustained a concussion early in the quarter, consequetnly sidelining him for the rest of the match. Casey seized their opportunity and made the most of our predicament by adding a further 5 goals 2 points, with us only able to add a point through Kunoth, stretching their lead to 48.

Testament to the character of the remaining squad, they battled on with one interchange to try and hold the Demons as they continued to attack in quite warm conditions. The never-give-up spirit of the remaining troops was able to hold the Demons to 5 goals and 5 points, which could have been a lot worse considering. Kunoth and Maddocks were only able to add 3 points during the quarter and a loss by 80 points was the result at the final siren. The intense action that continued all game had the spectators enthralled right until the very end.
